    We spoke about his roles as a judge in Australia and Hong Kong, significant judgments during his time as a High Court judge, the role of dissenting judgments, the use of academic commentary and overseas judgments, the doctrine of precedent and Farah v Say-Dee, and judgment writing styles.

He was first appointed to the High Court in 1972, having previously served on the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

    Mason was born in Sydney on 21 April 1925.[1] He was one of fyra children born to Eileen (née McArdle) and Frank Maxwell Mason. His father, a World War I veteran and Military Cross recipient, was a registered surveyor who developed a substantial practice on the North Shore of Sydney. He served terms as president of the New South Wales bodies for surveying and town planning.[2]
