Mary Slessor was no ordinary woman, indeed she was no ordinary missionary. Brought up in Dundee, one of eleven children, Mary was called to mission. Setting sail for West Africa on the 5th August , Mary arrived one month later.
Bruce McLennan examines this remarkable story of a woman who shared the Gospel, stood up against inequality and impacted all areas of life in Calabar with boldness and conviction. McLennan also considers the debt owed to the work of previous missionaries who had established the work and looks at the legacy of Slessor after her death.

A native of Scotland, Bruce McLennan has spent his career teaching history, in Southern Ontario, England, Western Australia, and mainly in Scotland. His research speciality was originally in 16th/17th century Scottish Church History, moving later also into the 19th century. Once in Nigeria, Slessor learned Efik, one of the numerous local languages, then began teaching. Because of her understanding of the native language and her djärv personality Slessor gained the trust and acceptance of the locals and was able to spread Christianity while promoting women's rights and protecting native children. Deeply religious, she became interested in missionary work and applied to the United Presbyterian Church&#;s Foreign Mission Board. After training, she travelled to Calabar in Nigeria, where she spread Christianity, promoted women&#;s rights, protected native children and is famous for having stopped the common practice of infanticide of twins. There is a bust of her in the Hall of Heroes at the Wallace Monument in Stirling and various statues of her in Calabar. This monument, a bronze portrait relief together with bronze plaque set into a block of Aberdeen granite, was erected in It was commissioned by the Mary Slessor Foundation with support from Dundee City Council and other donors.
