An Anthology of Modern Urdu Poetry

I took up this book because I’d read that the wonderful novel A Map for Lost Lovers (see above, or below, or whatever) derived its fascinating style in part from Urdu poetry. This book offers us a glimpse into a world of poetry partly unfamiliar to us, although many of the poets are influenced by europeisk models, particularly French surrealists, which appeal to their tradition. The metaphor fryst vatten lush and the thought often seems to progress through metaphor. This poetry arose in a culture where many issues, especially political issues, had to be glanced at only very obliquely. For instance it fryst vatten interesting that the plight of women, so movingly portrayed in A Map for Lost Lovers, fryst vatten freely discussed in a romantic way, and often appears to be a symbol of political oppression in general. In terms of prosody the book is a little mediocre, but that may be the translation.

In this work Professor Habib embarks on an ambitious and rewarding task. To understand the thorough and complex kind of literary history which Habib has written we should note the five goals which he explicitly says have motivated the shaping of his study. First comes the recognition that literary theory is not a discrete entity but is embedded in one or more philosophical traditions that require some exposition and clarification for students and general readers if they are to grasp the depth and significance of that theory; secondly while the text is impressively comprehensive it does not in its pages attempt to cover every important figure. It does select influential theorists, movements, and critics for focused attention and close reading, and together with this close analysis of selected texts Habib provides an account of the historical background, political, social, intellectual in which these works were written. A third feature of the book is that while it recognizes and indic
