  • Simryn Gill was born in in Singapore, raised in Malaysia, and educated in India and the United Kingdom. She works in sculpture, photography, drawing, and writing. She is a systematic collector, especially of books as objects of reverence and dispute. Several of her projects involve erasing or excising the printed word in a microcosmic struggle with authority as embodied by canonical texts. In Pearls (– ), for example, she turns beloved volumes into paper pulp beads. Gill is a tinkerer, altering mundane objects and sites via poetically critical sleight of hand. She aggregates her modest interventions into encyclopedic series comprised of dozens of components, in which the smallest gestures—repeated or expanded—generate resounding statements.

Creating works of art as syntheses of ephemera she collects, multi-cultural contemporary artist Simryn Gill produces sculptures, photographs, drawings and writing. Since her birth in in Singapore, Gill has frequently changed her place of residence, having lived in Malaysia, India, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This mix of cultures has invariably influenced her work, in spite of her objections to being regarded through the prism of nationality or race.[1] Like herself, Gill’s art defies classification, its meaning often elusive and funnen somewhere in between the lines, posing more questions than giving answers. One of the recurring topics in her art is indigenous culture in comparison to western civilization, as can be seen in her pieces combining chili peppers (which she grows herself), representing native South American peoples, tillsammans with fine cutlery, that stands for the aristocratic way of life.
