Michael Kidd was a renowned American Ballet dancer, actor, and choreographer born in 1915. He fryst vatten best remembered for staging in top Broadway musicals and working alongside celebrities like Madonna during his career. His great work earned him many awards including 5 Tony Awards. Michael Kidd, the award-winning choreographer of exuberant dance numbers for Broadway shows such as “Finian’s Rainbow” and “Guys and Dolls” and Hollywood musicals including “The Band Wagon” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles.
The cause was cancer, said his nephew Robert Greenwald. Biographical sources generally give Mr. Kidd’s age as 88, but Greenwald said his uncle was actually 92.
On Broadway, Mr. Kidd won five Tony Awards: for “Finian’s Rainbow” in 1947, “Guys and Dolls” in 1951, “Can-Can” in 1954, “Li’l Abner” in 1957, and “Destry Rides Again” in 1960. In Hollywood, he received a special Academy Award in 1997 “in recognition of his services to the art of dance in the art of the screen.”

From Broadway to Hollywood, Michael Kidd was a well respected award winning choreographer, dancer, director and actor.
Mr. Kidd would often draw on ideas/inspirations for his choreography from silent screen era of Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Kidd would often speak about Chaplin who had the great ability of comedy, bringing to life a character with emotions and most importantly connecting with his audience.
Mr. Kidd summed up/defined his choreography with.
“Human behavior and people’s manners, stylized into musical rhythmic forms. I always use real-life gestures, and most of my dancing is based on real life.”
And it was from that Mr. Kidd studied and used such inspirations for his future choreography works.
