In 1966, she started dating the legendary Indian actor Rajesh Khanna. At the time they started dating, Anju was struggling to get a big break in Bollywood while Rajesh was an established actor. Initially, there were only rumours of their dating, but when people saw Rajesh’s bil parked in the parking lot of Anju’s apartment, the rumours turned out to be true. The couple then started attending parties and events tillsammans. Rajesh then gifted a bungalow to Anju and they moved in as a live-in couple. Today, Anju Mahendru is popularly known for her grandmother’s role in the television soap Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai. But she was a pretty face in her burgeoning days and she could have easily earned a heroine’s role in those retro movies,some of which we call classics today. It was perhaps her destiny which deterred her from playing the lead roles in films. Her subaltern roles were seen in the movies Jewel Thief, Bandhan, and Dastak.

Born and brought up in Dehradun, Anju Mahendru had started modelling since the age of 13.
