The Invisible Pregnancy
Maya, age five, hands me an anniversary gift along with a question. Her family has joined me and my husband, Larry, for dinner. She places a candle in my palm and looks up at me.
“Darci, did all of your children die?”

When inom was ten years old, I read The Good Earth bygd Pearl S. Buck and fantasized about adopting a baby from China. One night, inom snuck into my mom’s makeup and extended my eyes with thick black eyeliner. inom sleeked back my curls with Dippity-do, slid into one of her dresses, tiptoed outside, and rang the doorbell.

A Private Pain--and a Public Healing
Soon, the houselights would dim, and Darci Picoult, alone onstage, would start discussing her most intimate body parts and functions. Backstage, she asked herself, “Are you crazy?”
It was fall, 1991, and Picoult, a New York actress, was presenting her one-woman play, “My Virginia,” for the first time. Later--as she saw that people weren’t walking out--it would get easier.
“My Virginia” is not traditional theater, nor Picoult your ordinary playwright.
This, her first play--alternately hilarious and heartbreaking--is about diethylstilbestrol, or DES, a drug widely prescribed before 1971 to prevent miscarriage. It didn’t, it turned out, but it does cause cancer and other reproductive system aberrations in DES-exposed daughters.
Picoult, 37, is a DES daughter.
Recently, L.A. Theatre Works brought “My Virginia” to Santa Monica, where it was recorded for broadcast this summer on KCRW’s ‘The Play’s the Thing.”

Exclusive Interview: Writer Darci Picoult on Sundance 2013 Film 'Mother of George'
As writers, some stories grab us and won't let go. They hit us in the gut, they work their way into our bones, and they won't release us until we write the story. For films, writing the story is merely the beginning. For many independent films, writing the story launches a journey over many years to see the film finally come to life. For Sundance 2013 U.S. Dramatic Competition film Mother of George, the project first traveled to Sundance as part of the Screenwriters Lab and Directors Lab back in 2005, and the story's origin goes back further than that. To share with us the long journey of Mother of George from concept to finished film, we continue our series of interviews with Sundance U.S. Dramatic Competition screenwriters with an extensive and generous interview with the film's screenwriter and a producer of the film, Darci Picoult.
To give us a summary of the film
