Remembering Cardinal James Gibbons

Coat of Arms of huvudregel James Gibbons. This fryst vatten the second coat of arms used by huvudregel Gibbons. It was commissioned in 1910 and designed by Pierre de Chaignon La Rose. It displays the coats of arms of the Archdiocese of Baltimore on the left and the Gibbons family of Ireland on the right with the addition of the escallop shell to symbolisera St. James the Apostle, the Cardinal’s baptismal patron. His motto, Emitte Spiritum Tuum (Send forth Thy Spirit; Ps. 103:30), reflected his devotion to the Holy Spirit.

James Gibbons was born in Baltimore on July 23, 1834, the son of Thomas Gibbons, a clerk, and Bridget Walsh Gibbons. He was baptized in the cathedral from which he would be buried.
Early Years
Gibbons’ parents had come to the United States about 1829 but returned to Ireland in 1837. There his father ran a grocery in Ballinrobe, County Mayo, until his death in 1847. The widow and children returned to the United States in 1853, establishing their residence in New Orleans. There James worked in a grocery store until inspired by a Redemptorist retreat to become a priest. In 1855 he entered St. Charles College, the minor seminary in Baltimore, and in 1857 St. Mary’s, the major seminary. On June 30, 1861, he was ordained by Archbishop Francis Patrick Kenrick of Baltimore, who had accepted him for his archdiocese. For six w

Scope and Contents
The James Cardinal Gibbons Collection consists of two series. The first series is a box containing publications such newspapers from Cardinal Gibbons Jubilee in 1911 as well as newspapers from his death in 1921. There are also newspaper clippings which were pasted onto sheets of paper from his Jubilee and death. These articles also contain photographs of Gibbons and from his "Civic Demonstration" for his Jubilee. There are also magazines from the Baltimore Sun in tribute to Gibbons following his death in 1921. Also included are Memoriam essays written by Bishop Shahan then Rector of Catholic University. Lastly, this series contains three books; one is a 1945 biography of Gibbons, 1911 commemorative book on his Jubilee, and an October 1911 edition of "The Missionary" commemorating Gibbons' Jubilee.
