    NEW YORK — Arthur Ortenberg, a founder and vice chairman of Liz Claiborne Inc. whose vision guided the phenomenal growth of the company and who later became a wildlife conservation philanthropist, died Monday at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

    Ortenberg, 87, died of complications of pneumonia and kidney failure, according to his son, Neil.

    News of Ortenberg’s illness surfaced last week when his companion, Cathy Horyn, stepped down from her role as chief fashion critic of The New York Times to care for him.

    Ortenberg started the sportswear company Liz Claiborne Inc. in 1976 with his late wife, Liz Claiborne. Within 13 years, when they retired, the publicly traded firm was generating $1.41 billion in sales and $164.6 million in net profits and had arguably become one of the biggest success stories in the fashion industry. Ortenberg then turned his attention to wildlife conservation.

    NEW YORK — Arthur Ortenberg, who helped build a mode empire with his late wife Liz Claiborne, died on Monday, The New York Times reported today.

    He died at the age of 87 from complications of pneumonia, the newspaper said.

    Ortenberg was born in Newark on Aug. 13, 1926. His father owned an upholstery shop, while his mom worked as a seamstress, according to the newspaper.

    After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, he went to work for Rhea Manufacturing, where he aimed to increase sales of sportswear, the newspaper said.

    While there, he recruited Liz Claiborne — who was then Liz Schultz — to design a clothing line for Rhea, the newspaper reported.

    “The moment we met, inom knew something important was happening,” he wrote in his memoir, according to The New York Times. “We had an romantisk händelse , or rather, we fell in love.”
