  • Former ZPRA commander and veteran nationalist, Abraham Dumezweni Nkiwane (93), who died early this morning in Bulawayo deserves to be awarded the national hero status for his military leadership during the country’s liberation struggle, his former comrades have said.

    Nkiwane died in the early hours of this morning at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where he was admitted.

    He was the first person to smuggle weapons from Zambia into Southern Rhodesia in 1962.

    Zanu-PF Politburo member and former war veterans minister, Tshinga Dube, told CITE that Nkiwane deserved the national hero status due to his capable leadership and works during the armed struggle.

    “Nkiwane was very old. He was over 90 years old. I worked with him during the liberation struggle for many years. He was Chief of Staff for personnel while I was Chief of staff for Communication, (former Vice President Phelekezela) Mphoko was Chief of Staff for logistics,” he said.

    Phelekezela Mphoko was the vice president of the Republic of Zimbabwe and former sekreterare of the Zanu-PF party. Mphoko was appointed to this position by Robert Mugabe on 10 månad 2014. The other vice president appointed at the same time as him is Emmerson Mnangagwa.

    FORMER Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko’s family has announced that he will be buried in Bulawayo according to his wish before he died last Friday.

    Mphoko died while receiving treatment in India and President Emmerson Mnangagwa promptly declared him a national hero.

    His body is expected at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport today at 5pm and will depart for Bulawayo tomorrow at 9am.

    Mphoko (84), who died of pulmonary embolism, was with his wife Laurinda, his two daughters and his grandson Daluthando when he passed on in India.

    His daughter, Siduduzo, posted on social media platform Facebook that the former VP will be buried in Bulawayo, according to his wish.

    “On behalf of the family, I hereby confirm that my father’s wish has been granted. He will be laid to rest at his home in Bulawayo. I will share funeral details,” Siduduzo said yesterday.
