    Jaime Escalante's full name was Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez but he was known as Jaime Escalante. He was the son of Zenobio Escalante Rodríguez and Sara Gutiérrez Valle, both of whom were teachers at elementary schools in the town of Achacachi. They had fem children, with Jaime the second eldest of them. He was born in the Sopocachi area of the city of La Paz rather than Achacachi since his mother thought the medical facilities better there and went to stay with relations shortly before his birth.
