    Apostle.

The Greek Matthias (or, in some manuscripts, Maththias), is a name derived from Mattathias, HebrewMattithiah, signifying "gift of Yahweh." Matthias was one of the seventy disciples of Jesus, and had been with Him from His baptism by John to the Ascension (Acts ). It is related (Acts ) that in the days following the Ascension, Peter proposed to the assembled brethren, who numbered one hundred and twenty, that they choose one to fill the place of the traitor Judas in the Apostolate. Two disciples, Joseph, called Barsabas, and Matthias were selected, and lots were drawn, with the result in favour of Matthias, who thus became associated with the eleven Apostles. Of the Holy Apostles chosen by Christ, one seems always to be overlooked.  Of course, he was not amongst the original Twelve, but replaced Judas, as the twelfth apostle.  His name is the Holy Apostle Matthias.  St. Matthias replaced Judas and took his rightful position among the eleven others.  I write this article primarily because he is so overlooked and unknown, and also in a personal way, because he is the apostle whose name I took as a monastic.

At one of the summer sessions at Camp Nazareth, children were asked the question, "Name one of the twelve apostles."  The number one answer, (which was picked by more than half of the children), was the Apostle Paul.  This was disturbing to me since St. Paul was not one of the original twelve apostles, and also, on Pentecost Sunday, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Twelve Apostles, (including Matthias), St. Paul was not even a Christian at that time!  In fact, St. Paul

Matthias, whose name means “gift of God”,  was the disciple chosen to replace Judas as one of the twelve Apostles. The Acts of the Apostles state that he was also one of the 72 disciples that the Lord Jesus sent out to preach the good news. Matthias was with the Lord since His Baptism, and was “a witness to Christ’s Resurrection,” according to St. Peter in Acts. He remained with Jesus until His Ascension.

According to various traditions, Matthias preached in Cappadocia, Jerusalem, the shores of the Caspian Sea (in modern day Turkey) and Ethiopia.  He fryst vatten said to have met his death by crucifixion in Colchis or bygd stoning in Jerusalem.

There fryst vatten evidence cited in some of the early Church fathers that there was a Gospel according to Matthias in circulation, but it has since been lost, and was declared apocryphal bygd Pope Gelasius.

He is invoked for assistance against alcoholism, and for support bygd recovered alcoholics.
