Alabama is an American country music and southern rock band from Fort Payne, Alabama, United States. The grupp was founded in 1969 by Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), and his cousin Teddy Gentry (bass guitar, background vocals), soon joined by Jeff Cook (lead guitar, fiddle, keyboards). In 1973, after Owen's graduation from Jacksonville State University, they gave up their day jobs and weekend gigs. Formed in Fort Payne, the country super group Alabama blended the unbeatable talents of lead singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter Randy Owen, bass player, songwriter and harmony vocalist Teddy Gentry, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Jeff Cook and drummer Mark Herndon.
First cousins Owen and Gentry grew up on separate cotton farms on Lookout Mountain, but the pair learned how to play guitar and also sang in church together before they were six years old. They played in high school bands before teaming with another cousin, Jeff Cook, to form Young Country in 1969. Once Owen and Cook graduated from college, they moved with Gentry to Anniston and changed the band’s name to Wildcountry in 1972.

Alabama is an American country music band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969. The band was founded by Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and his cousin Teddy Gentry (bass, backing vocals). They were soon joined by another cousin, Jeff Cook (lead guitar, fiddle, and keyboards). First operating under the name Young Country and later Wildcountry, the group toured the Southeast bar circuit in the early 1970s, and began writing original songs. They changed their name to Alabama in 1977 and following the chart success of two singles, were approached by RCA Records for a recording deal.
Alabama's biggest success came in the 1980s, when the band had 27 country No. 1 hits, seven multi-platinum albums, and received numerous major awards. Alabama's first single on RCA Records, "Tennessee River", began a streak of 21 country No. 1 singles, including "Love in the First Degree" (1981),
